Position available: Promote Reforestation in Rural Mining Communities!

The OSM/VISTA Teams is seeking a qualified, dedicated candidate to serve as our Reforestation Coordinator. Based in Beckley, WV, this position will work to develop and create a sustainable outreach program for the OSM/VISTA Teams Reforestation Initiative. The OSM/VISTA Teams Reforestation Coordinator will be able to build on past success and continue to develop a plan in order to achieve sustainability for the program. The following describes the projects that the OSM/VISTA Teams* Reforestation Coordinator will take to support our Initiative.

"OSM/VISTA Teams" is defined as the Appalachian Coal Country Team, the Western Hardrock Watershed Team, the Washington DC office, and the Rural Volunteerism Initiative.

Outreach is necessary for the future of these organizations in terms of funding, volunteers, and community partners. This in turn will allow the OSM/VISTA Teams and their partner organizations to continue to carry out their anti-poverty mission through community revitalization and environmental stewardship. 

 OVERVIEW:

The successful candidate will:

  1. Promote reforestation opportunities in the Appalachian and Rocky Mountain Regions
  2. Secure funding to support reforestation projects
  3. Develop partnerships between project sites and federal/state forestry agencies
  4. Assist projects in developing a strong education and outreach program for their reforestation projects
  5. Conduct volunteer management consultations with projects to foster sustainability for the organization
  6. Manage reporting requirements for projects and grants
  7. Travel and participate in reforestation events, when possible
  8. Organize relevant training opportunities for reforestation projects/volunteers
  9. Apply and manage National Community Conservation Corps (NCCC)  and Alternative Spring Break (ASB) crews when appropriate:
    1. Encourage project partner sites to utilize NCCC/ASB work
    2. Promote the work of NCCC/ASB projects through outreach venues and website
    3. Support the work of the NCCC/ASB crews through calls, contacts, site visits, and so on
    4. Develop appropriate recognition programs for NCCC/ASB crews
  10. Support the work of the Collaborative Waterboxx Pilot Project

The candidate should have a minimum of a Bachelor's Degree—Business Administration or Environmental Sciences preferred—and relevant experience through internships or past employment. This position is a Fellowship/Internship that provides a monthly stipend ($12,100 annual), a Segal Education Award (valued at $5,550) at the end of the one year assignment, health insurance, and other benefits. This position has the opportunity to renew depending on funding.
